How to choose a digital marketing agency in Puerto Vallarta: the 10 questions to ask before you sign

They all promise “more customers”. Few explain how, how much and how they will measure it. This is the list of questions we would ask any digital marketing agency in Puerto Vallarta before signing — ours included.

Puerto Vallarta has more digital marketing agencies than taco stands in Pitillal, and almost all of them say the same thing: “we get you more customers”. The problem is not that they lie; it is that “digital marketing” is an umbrella covering very different things — Google rankings, the map listing, social media, paid ads, email, reviews — and a small business does not need all of them, nor at the same time, nor at the same price.

We wrote this guide from the shop, where we run digital marketing and SEO for Puerto Vallarta businesses as one more line next to the signs. It is deliberately uncomfortable: these are the questions that separate a serious agency from one selling smoke, and they apply to us too. If an agency cannot answer them clearly on the first call, there is your answer.

Before looking for an agency: what your business needs, in order

The most expensive mistake is hiring the full package when only one thing was missing. For a local business around the bay, the order that wastes the least money is almost always this:

  1. Your Google Business listing. It is free, it decides the map, and most businesses have it half done. Correct category, real hours, your own photos, services filled in and steady reviews. If your agency does not start here, it starts wrong. We have a full guide: local SEO in Puerto Vallarta.
  2. A site that works. Fast on mobile, in Spanish and English, with WhatsApp on every page. Without this, every peso in ads falls into a broken funnel. If you have none or yours does not work, it is web design before any campaign.
  3. Rankings (SEO). Slow work — 3 to 6 months — but the only channel that keeps bringing calls after you stop paying. One page per service, content that answers what people search for, reviews and mentions.
  4. Ads. Google Ads for the person already searching; Meta Ads for the one who does not know they need you yet. Fast, measurable, with a budget paid directly to the platform, separate from the fee.
  5. Social media. It matters, but sells less than it seems for most local businesses. It builds trust and repeat visits; it is rarely the first acquisition channel.

The 10 questions to ask before you sign

1. What exactly will you do each month?

“Full-service management” is not an answer. Ask for the list of deliverables: how many posts, which pages will be created or fixed, which campaigns, what work on the Google listing. A serious agency gives you a written monthly plan; one that does not will charge you the same whatever it does.

2. How will you measure results, and what will I see in the report?

The right answer includes enquiries: calls, WhatsApp messages, forms, bookings. The suspicious answer talks about reach, impressions, followers and “engagement”. Those numbers exist, but they do not pay the rent. Ask for a sample report from another client (anonymised) before signing.

3. Do you guarantee the first spot on Google?

If they say yes, get up from the table. Nobody controls the algorithm. What can be guaranteed is measurable work: what was changed, what was published, how searches moved. Whoever swears to the first spot is charging you for the promise, not the work.

4. Is the ad budget separate or inside the fee?

It must be separate, paid directly to Google or Meta from an account in your name, and the agency should charge for managing it, not keep an opaque percentage. When ad spend is “included” in a closed package, there is no way to know how much actually went into ads and how much was fee.

5. Do the accounts stay in my name?

Google Business, Google Ads, Meta Business, Search Console, Analytics, domain and hosting: all in your business’s name, with the agency as a removable administrator. It is the number one complaint we hear about previous agencies: the owner left and lost access to their own Google listing.

6. Do you know Puerto Vallarta?

This is not parochialism, it is strategy. Search here is bilingual and seasonal: half search in Spanish from three blocks away and half in English from Calgary, high season starts moving on Google in September, and the map does not reward a downtown business the same way as one in Ixtapa. An out-of-town agency that does not know this will spend your budget in the wrong season and in one language.

7. Who writes the copy and where do the photos come from?

Service copy and posts should come from your real business, in your tone, not from a template or an unreviewed AI. The photos should be yours: your place, your team, your dishes, your work. If the agency is going to use stock images, your marketing will look just like your competitor’s.

8. What happens if it does not work?

An honest answer sounds like: “in three months we look at the numbers together and decide”. A dishonest one talks about twelve-month contracts with penalties. For SEO it is reasonable to ask for six months, because it cannot be fairly judged before; for campaigns, a three-month pilot. But always with an exit.

9. Can you show me a case like mine?

Not a logo in their portfolio: a case. What the client had, what was done, what happened to enquiries. If they only have clients in another industry or another city, it is not disqualifying, but you need to know.

10. How much does it cost and what does that price include?

A written quote with the breakdown: monthly fee, suggested ad budget, what is included and what is quoted separately (photography, a new site, design). And beware of the opposite: an agency that quotes without having done an audit is guessing.

What a digital marketing agency costs in Puerto Vallarta

Market ranges we see around the bay in 2026, in pesos before tax, for reference. These are agency fees; ad spend is paid separately and you decide it:

  • Google listing + reviews + basic local SEO only: $3,000 to $6,000 MXN per month. This is where every peso pays most for a small business.
  • Social media (calendar, design and publishing, 8 to 12 posts): $4,000 to $9,000 MXN per month. More if it includes video or photo shoots.
  • Campaign management (Google and Meta Ads): $3,000 to $8,000 MXN per month in fees, plus ad spend — from $3,000 a month makes sense for local searches; less barely moves anything.
  • Full SEO (technical, content, local): $6,000 to $15,000 MXN per month, six months minimum to evaluate.
  • Integrated plan (SEO + social + campaigns + reporting): $12,000 to $30,000 MXN per month depending on the industry and competition.

Much cheaper than this usually means automated work with no judgement; much more expensive is only justified in highly competitive industries — real estate, hotels, vacation rentals — with large ad budgets.

Five signs of an agency selling smoke

  1. Promises results in weeks for organic rankings. Local SEO with a well-worked listing moves in 4 to 8 weeks; site rankings, in months.
  2. Does not ask about your business before sending the proposal. If the quote arrives before the questions, it is a generic package.
  3. Talks about followers as if they were customers.
  4. Will not let you see the ad accounts or Search Console “because they belong to the agency”.
  5. Their own site loads slowly, is not in English or does not show up when you search “marketing agency in Puerto Vallarta”. What they do not do for themselves, they will not do for you.

What we do differently at the shop

We are, first of all, a print shop. We came to digital marketing because the same clients who ordered the sign and the menu asked us “so how do I show up on Google?”. That gave us two advantages a pure agency does not have: we know our clients’ real business from the storefront in, and we already have photos of their work, their place and their products, because we take them at installation. The marketing is built on your real identity — the same orange from the sign in the Instagram post — not on stock images.

The rest is what we would ask of anyone: a free audit before quoting, a written monthly plan, accounts in your name, ad budget kept separate, a monthly enquiry report in plain language and an exit without penalties. If you want to start there, tell us what you sell and which area you are in.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What should a small Puerto Vallarta business do first: SEO, social media or ads?

Almost always the Google Business listing and a site that works on mobile and in two languages; it is free or cheap and it decides the map. Then SEO if you can wait 3 to 6 months, or ads if you need customers this month. Social media comes last for most local industries.

How much does a digital marketing agency charge in Puerto Vallarta?

In 2026 market fees run from $3,000 MXN per month for the Google listing and basic local SEO, up to $12,000–30,000 per month for an integrated plan with SEO, social and campaigns. Ad spend is paid separately, directly to Google or Meta, from an account in your name.

How do I know whether my agency is working?

By enquiries: calls, WhatsApp, forms and bookings attributed to each channel in the monthly report, and by how searches move in Search Console. If the report only talks about reach, impressions and followers, you are not measuring the business.

Is a local agency better than one from Guadalajara or Mexico City?

What matters is that it understands that search in Puerto Vallarta is bilingual and seasonal and that Google Maps depends on the area. An out-of-town agency can do it well if it knows this; a local one that does not apply it cannot. Ask how they will handle English and high season.

How long should I give an agency?

For SEO, six months is fair to evaluate; for campaigns, a three-month pilot. But always with an exit and with numbers every month: if after three months there is no progress in enquiries or searches, you rethink — you do not wait for the contract to end.

Can I run my business’s digital marketing myself?

A good part of it, yes: tidying the Google listing, asking for reviews consistently, uploading your own photos and posting on social with judgement. What usually needs help is the technical base of the site, bilingual content, structured data and campaign management.
